Angel nodded. And stop him from doing any experiments on the children and pups.
Beketov turned away and started toward the trail we d taken from the Jeep. We waste precious time.
Adam and I will catch up. I ran for the orange tent we d slept in, crouched, and crawled inside with Adam
    following.
My weapons belt was on top of my boots and the belt felt comforting when I fastened my buckler and the
sheathed daggers settled at my hips. I tugged on my boots, then almost smacked into Adam, who d pulled on a
T-shirt and had his shoulder holster on with his weapons secure in it.
Just a sec. Adam grabbed a pair of thick socks that were on top of his hiking boots. He tugged socks and
boots on fast enough to be worthy of a paranormal warrior, then shrugged into his worn, brown leather bomber
    jacket.
Everyone in the party was gone from the camp with the exception of Olivia, who was waiting for us. She held
Harkins by her upper arm and had her Sig pressed against the woman s temple.
Bunch of damned paranorms. Olivia holstered her handgun. They shifted and they re history. Probably
almost to the main trail. One of the Weres didn t go wolfie and is carrying everyone s weapons.
Adam took Harkins by her other arm and he and Olivia had to drag her and force her to walk as we started out
    of camp.
I don t get how they keep their clothing on when they shift, Adam said.
It s called magic. I shook my head at him. All paranorms have some kind of power, and that s one thing any
kind of Shifter or Doppler can do.
Shut up and move faster. Using the hand of her uninjured arm, Olivia yanked Harkins along, Harkins still
with her wrists cuffed behind her back. No pain registered on Olivia s face, as if she hadn t been shot just
    yesterday.
The intern was muttering, Vile, filthy spawns of Satan.
I almost punched Harkins this time, but instead started jogging ahead of Adam and Olivia.
I d thought Olivia had driven like a maniac before. This time, as she drove Adam s SUV in the pouring rain, it
was like she d gone completely insane. As if followed by a wake of devils trying to catch up with us, chasing us
away from Devil s Tombstone, once we got in Adam s SUV.
Adam sat in the back seat, guarding Harkins but looking like he was regretting letting Olivia drive. I was in the
front passenger seat, holding onto the Oh shit handle with a grip that almost cracked it.
We d taken Adam s vehicle because his SUV had the flashing red and blue law-enforcement headlights as well
as a siren and a radio. We needed to get to Manhattan safely and without being pulled over.
Windshield wipers were on hyper mode as they went back and forth to push the rain from our view. My skin
chilled as my mind turned toward thoughts of the possibility of Beketov and the other Weres being in New
York City tonight during the full moon.
Thank the Goddess it hadn t been long past dawn when we set out. We had to find the pups as fast as we could.
Beketov and his pack had to get back to their camp so that they had time to break everything down and hike
deeper into the Catskills so that humans would be safe from the Werewolves during the full moon.
Beketov had refused to move his people yet. Until he recovered the last three missing Weres, the pups, in
whatever condition they were in, he didn t plan to take his pack anywhere. With his son missing, he wasn t
being rational, as far as I was concerned.
When we reached the city, the SUV s emergency lights got us through rush-hour traffic jams, although not as
fast as any of us would have liked. Olivia still drove like devils had lit her butt on fire as she whipped the SUV
around vehicles on the packed streets, veering onto sidewalks, and dodging pedestrians.
I picked up one of Adam s police placards from the floorboard and tossed it on the dash so that we could park
anywhere but in front of a hydrant without being towed.
We finally reached the Guardian Scientific Research Center in Manhattan. The bright blue digital numbers on
the dashboard told us it was almost a quarter past eight.
Olivia whipped into a no-parking zone and the SUV s tires scraped the sidewalk. She came to a hard stop
behind the Weres SUV and I jerked forward, the seatbelt digging into my shoulder before I flopped back again.
Surprisingly, or maybe not so surprisingly, the five Weres were just strapping on their weapons when we
arrived, and not already in the building. The way Olivia had driven, it shouldn t have been a wonder we d
    caught up.
The Were SUV was parked just as illegally in front of us. I snatched the second police placard from the
floorboard before opening my door, getting out, and heading to the Weres.
In front of the research center, the street was crowded with people going to work. Some pedestrians looked at
the males and their rifles, but most just remained focused on their destinations. One thing about New Yorkers
they didn t usually make eye contact with anyone they didn t know.
Adam had to drag Harkins from his SUV because she refused to move willingly. With her hands cuffed behind
her back, she stumbled on the asphalt and landed hard on her knees. Olivia grabbed Harkins s upper arm again
and, along with Adam, yanked the intern to her feet.
Olivia drew her Sig and pressed it against Harkins s spine. By positioning her body close and just behind the
intern, Olivia kept the handgun hidden from view.
I gave the Weres the extra placard to put on their dash to keep their SUV from being towed. Not that the Weres
probably even gave a damn. They just wanted their pups.
    And revenge.
It was in Beketov s gaze. I saw Johnson s death in those tawny eyes and I knew it was in my expression, too.
Johnson would not live through this.
Security tried to stop us, but Adam flashed his badge and told them it was a highly sensitive matter. His words
were already fading as I hurried after the Weres. I heard Adam add that it would mean the security guards jobs
if a single word leaked out.
When I glanced over my shoulder, I wasn t sure Adam had convinced the two guards. The way they were
looking at the Czech SA Vz. 58 assault rifles the five Weres were carrying wasn t good.
Ice and Joshua must have been reading my mind. Next thing I knew they were on the guards and had them
bound and stuffed under the security desk. They d used strips of the guards own shirts to tie and gag them and
had done it amazingly fast. I had a feeling a little magic might have been involved to make sure the guards
    wouldn t get away.
We didn t risk the chance of taking an elevator and having anything happen like getting stuck or even gassed. [ Pobierz całość w formacie PDF ]
